My sketchbooks are where the making of a painting really starts. They help me finding ideas of subjects, composition, tonal patterns. There are usually vignettes made to identify interesting compositions. I look at them later to starts organizing my thoughts about selecting the ideas and deciding on the format and the process for each painting. It can happen that rework them later to search for more contrast or light, or introducing figures, sometime reproducing one with another medium to explore further the idea. I use mostly graphite but also other media such as gouache, pierre noire and sometime charcoal.
